Tom Schipper Consortium
Greetings from the as-yet-unnamed trombone duo comprised of Evan Conroy and Chris Van Hof! Evan is the bass trombonist of the Louisiana Philharmonic (currently on leave pursuing doctoral studies at Indiana), and Chris is the Assistant Professor of Trombone at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. We are embarking on a mini consortium to commission a new piece by the Amsterdam-based composer Tom Schipper for tenor trombone and bass trombone duet, with inclusion of electronics.
Tom Schipper is a gifted composer who is finding his voice in film scoring. He gained exposure in the trombone world in 2013 by winning both the Audience and Jury Prize at that year’s Slide Factory hosted by the New Trombone Collective. His winning piece is called “Dystopia,” and is included in a link below.
The piece we are commissioning will be a keystone in a series of new works for tenor and bass (sometimes with electronics) that draw explicitly and unapologetically from non-classical and non-jazz styles. Our goal is to promote music that uses the rhythms, syntax, phrasing, and feel of contemporary vernacular music ranging from pop, hip-hop, R&B, rock, metal, and other global music traditions. The pieces will be both challenging and satisfying for the professional performer, while still entertaining a varied audience.
For an idea of Tom's composing, visit his website, or listen to his award-winning trombone choir piece on this page just to the right.
Tom’s 5-7-minute-long duet will be complete by November of 2017, and we plan to premiere the piece in March 2018. We will retain the right of premiere and the subsequent right of first recording. We are aiming for a cost of $160 per duo ($80 per person—not a bad price!). If you are interested, please use the contact form below and include "Schipper commission" in the subject line.
Decision deadline: 1 June 2017. in order for the commission to come out on time, we must have the consortium in place by the start of June.
